People can really go somewhere with 'City & Guilds' and 'Apprenticeship' qualifications. We award them to the highest standards of professional ability in hairdressing that gives you the skill you need for the job you want, and employers the world over recognise that too.
A City & Guilds qualification can be undertaken at any age, although the normal point of entry is as a direct entrant from school.
The following information is designed to give you an overview into what is available to you by training at the Hair Academy.
National Vocational Qualification
Level 2 in Hairdressing
This qualification will lead you to an excellent all round basic knowledge of hairdressing and include some of the following subjects:-
- Shampooing and conditioning hair and scalp
- Colouring
- Perming and neutralising
- Understanding Health & Safety issues and practices
- Client consultaion and advice
- Reception skills
- Haircutting
National Vocational Qualification
Level 3 in Hairdressing
This qualification extends the level of knowledge gained at level 2 and covers other responsibilities within the salon to include the following:-
- Advanced cutting/colouring/perming techniques
- Long hair styling
- Promotional Activities
- Show/photographic work
- Improving performance in the salon
Aprenticeships
Over the course of an apprenticeship programme you will develop a wide range of skills to give you understanding and competency that are recognised across the industry. They will show a firm commitment to your training for your employer and will help you gain the knowledge and experience to take your first steps on the ladder of your chosen career.
An Apprenticeship includes:-
- City & Guilds Qualification Level 2
- Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number
An Advanced Apprenticeship includes:-
- City & Guilds qualification Levels 2 & 3
- Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number
- Technical certificate in Hairdressing
Most of the time you will be working in a salon gaining practical exerience called work-based learning. For one day a week you will attend the Hair Academy and join the tutors and other trainees from your area. You will cover the theory training and practical skills needed for your qualification.
The tutors will visit you regularly at your salon to review your progress, and set challenging new learning objectives.
When you have obtained an apprenticeship with the Hair Academy, hairstylists will find the world of hairdressing opening up before them. Job opportunities are endless from working in a top salon in your town to working abroad or on cruise liners, lecturing or training in a salon or academy. You could become a fashion session hairdresser for photographic shoots for the glossy magazines or even working in the television, stage and film industry.
